DEER LAKE HIGHLANDS, Los Angeles County — Residents of the hills north of Chatsworth should review current wildfire-hazard information before changing landscaping, buying property or planning an emergency exit.
Los Angeles County Planning’s June 2024 Oat Mountain / Twin Lakes community map states that the area falls within a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. The map includes Deer Lake Highlands, now generally called Deerlake Ranch, nearby Twin Lakes and surrounding mountain open space.

Fire hazard is not a forecast of a particular wildfire. Property-level responsibilities may also depend on 2025 updated hazard designations, building age, local Fire Department rules, defensible space and insurance requirements. Homeowners should verify their address in the current CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone viewer and ask LA County Fire Department about applicable vegetation-clearance rules.
Emergency evacuation alerts must come from current public-safety agencies, not a historic planning map. Households should plan alternative routes and a way to receive warnings if cell service fails.
